James M. Swofford born Jan. 15, 1822 Lawrence Co. Tn.
His father’s family was in Lawrence Co. TN. in the 1820’s and his mother, Polly Smith, is believed to have died there. (See Isaac Swafford’s info.)
He and his brother, William Riley, were back in Clay Co. Ky by 1840 where he married Nancy Abner Aug. 3, 1842. William Riley gave consent. Nancy died shortly afterward and he recalled that loss to his grandson, Madison E. Swofford many years later. After his marriage to Malinda Gregory, they moved to Davies Co. Mo. in 1854 along with his brother John and Sister Anna Lipps and their families. There he suffered another loss when Malinda died at the birth of their son Isaac. Shortly afterwards he married Susan Tippet who also had a son, Charley M., about 6 months old, Charley was given the Swofford name. The name Swafford was spelled Swofford from the time they moved to Missouri.
